Welcome Back, Tena Stetler!

I’m a writer. That’s what I do, I write. I’ve spun tales since I was old enough to read and put Crayola to paper. With my vivid over active imagination, I’m never at a loss for a magical story.  The tricky part is keeping it interesting and flowing from beginning to end. Over the past couple of years, there’s been family crisis in my world and illnesses.

While I’ve rarely had real life disrupt my writing, it did this time – big time. After surviving COVID in 2021, a blood clot caused by COVID, then the necessity of major surgery of full hip replacement on October 5, 2022, the words didn’t come as easily. Now this wasn’t “writer’s block”, the ideas were still there, but the continuity was not -- making my current work in progresses difficult to finish. Thank goodness, my holiday novella was complete and submitted, with a release date of November 14, 2022.

I barely made my weekly word count, but my heart just wasn’t in the words. Self-doubt danced around the edges of my mind. Was it the recent chaos in my life or was the well running dry? 

The family drama and illness has settled down, the loose ends are still running amuck, but we’ll get them tamed.  I’m off the heavy duty pain killers(nothing worse than your mind floating off and you can’t catch it), almost able to care for myself, getting rested up and feeling more me.  Scary thought, huh? Wow what a difference that makes.

Yesterday the words were back in abundance. Yippee! My story is back on track and racing toward the finish line. I’ll make that dead line. I hope. And NaNoWriMo which I’d lost hope of finishing is almost on track.

I put these words to paper—Or I guess actually it’s to screen so others will know there is always a light at the end of that dark tunnel.  Sometimes you just have to wait for the ray of light, but it’s there lurking.  That’s tough for me as I’m the impatient, determined sort. Well, it’s time to delve back into my next book in the new Mountain Town Mystery Series before the characters take off in the wrong direction…again. 

Take time to enjoy your family and friends this holiday season. Remember to take care of you during this busy season. A short walk, relax in a quiet place can get the juices flowing again.

A sneak peek between the pages of MERINGUE SNOWFLAKE MAGIC. 

The wind had changed direction, and the pretty ice crystals were like tiny needles buffeting her face. She looked up and down Main Street and saw only one stoplight. Finally, she turned around and walked backward for a few yards. Glancing over her shoulder, she could see her street. She started to turn around, her foot slipped on the curb and arms flailing, down she went with a thud. Clutching her precious box of goodies in front of her, they were safe. However, the mug of hot chocolate popped the lid and sent hot chocolate in all directions, including all over her brand new bright-colored parka and the sidewalk. When she tried to get up, each foot went in a different direction, then down she went again. Getting to her knees, she crawled to the sidewalk, carefully got to her feet, and tried to brush the wet snow off. The damp material stuck to her. She began to shiver as the wind whipped around her.

“Hey lady, you all right?” A man stopped his SUV in the middle of the road and jumped out. “That was quite a spill you took.” He smiled wide, picking up her mug and lid. “But I see your goodies from Candi’s place are still intact. Let me give you a ride. You’re going to freeze as wet as your clothes are.” He held out his hand. “Braydon Nightwing, but everyone calls me Blaze. I own the pizza place a few blocks down the way.” 

When she reached for his hand, her arm shook. Her teeth chattered as she tried to say her name. “Wynterrr.”

“It’s warm in my SUV. Please tell me where you’re going. I’ll get you there.” He pried her fingers from the box, helped her over to the vehicle, and opened the passenger door. Warm air rushed out of the SUV, caressing her face.

Please don’t let him be a serial killer. Slowly, she reached behind her and patted her waistband. Shit. Why didn’t I bring my weapon? Getting in a car with a stranger wasn’t smart. But the warmth emanating from the vehicle was inviting.  Death by serial killer or freeze. She crawled into the SUV and huddled in front of the heater vents.

Participating in a Multi-Author Series – Interesting and Fun.

Have you ever started a project only to discover it's not going to be anything like you envisioned? Such is the constant situation of a writer who writes by the seat of her pants. The characters involved in the story take over and run with the plot, character arc, and anything else within their grasp. 

Because I can't plot my way out of a paper bag, and I've tried, I endure the escapades of my characters. Nine times out of ten, I end up with an imaginative and well-written book. Such is the case of my new release, An Angel's Wylder Assignment, part of The Wild Rose Press multi-author Wyld West series.

Creating a fictional community with other authors is fun if a little daunting. So many individuals' points of view and writing technics melded into one world. Sharing characters in the many storylines and making it all cohesive can be challenging but fun for all. Readers get to engage with characters they already know and love, then discover new characters added to the mix in a town or community familiar to them.  

If you have never read or written a multi-author series, I highly recommend The Wylder West Series. There are genres to satisfy all readers tastes.  

My contribution is An Angel’s Wylder Assignment. 

Warrior Angel Killian Dugan’s annual trip to the family castle in Scotland is shattered by the arrival of Legion Commander North. Killian’s skills are needed for an urgent time travel assignment. A rogue demon has escaped back in time. He must discover the why and where and stop the demon before it can damage the past and change the future.

 

Killian’s girlfriend Chinoah Grace, a Native American shapeshifter is included in the mission which takes them to the wild west town of Wylder, Wyoming in the year 1878. She will have her hands full fitting in and making friends.

 

Nothing is as it seems.  They encounter visions, spirit quests, and a mysterious shaman.  On top of it all, blending in as a blacksmith is more physically difficult than he imagined. But not as challenging as keeping his hands off his undercover wife. Will they complete their assignment or run out of time?

Excerpt 

Killian landed feet first in the rocky soil of Healing Waters just a few feet from the canyon edge at the rushing waters of the Big Horn River. Adventure, the dog, whined at his side. The bags were precariously balanced next to the edge. But no Chinoah. He jumped up and shaded his eyes as he searched for her. His pulse quickened. Had she landed in the river?  

A few seconds later, she hit the ground a few feet from him.

Relief flooded through him. He rushed to snatch her up off the ground. “I told you to hang on. Getting separated is not something we want to happen. You could be lost in…” Her huge dark chocolate brown eyes were the size of saucers staring up at him. Her mouth opened and closed without a sound. He grabbed her shoulders and gave a little shake. “Chinoah? You all right?” 

Finally, she huffed out a breath. “What the hell happened? One minute I’ve got a firm hold on your arm, the next a huge jolt. I saw the ground, then you slipped from my grasp, and the swirling vortex of colors sucked me back inside. Almost like some kind of warning. Weird. A second later, it spit me out.”

Heart pounding like a trip hammer, he tried to present calm for both their sakes. “Can’t say. I’ve never had that kind of experience. But, to be fair, never ported with so many things and people before. Up until a few months ago, I was a loner. Then poof—” he made a starburst motion with his hand “—you crashed into my life. Things have never been the same. Wyoming seems to be the catalyst of all the changes in my world.”

A feeling of being watched washed over Killian. He whirled around and the shaman stood in front of him.

Hi Jennifer! Thank you so much for hosting me and HIDDEN GYSPY MAGIC on your beautiful blog. I’m thrilled to be here and so excited to share with you the inspiration for my fantasy, time travel, adventure.

I am a panster, I write by the seat of my pants. LOL When I sit down at my computer to start a new story. I have already completed a five page worksheet on each of my Characters involved in that book concerning their likes, dislikes, goal, motivation, conflict in how to get what they want, hair and eye color, type of dress, behavior traits, etc. I also have a good idea where the story is going, but usually the tale gets high-jacked by my characters. Consequently, where I think the story is going and where it actually winds up can be entirely different. While this makes the writing fun when you don’t know exactly where  its headed, it can be a nightmare when two of more characters disagree on the direction the book should take.  LOL That’s when I step in and take it where it needs to go. Believe it or not that doesn’t happen too often. Almost like the characters have agreed ahead of time how they are going to high-jack my…ahem… their story.  

Part of the inspiration for Hidden Gypsy Magic was the characters themselves. Gwen was introduced in A Witch’s Journey. Brock came to fruition in A Witch’s Holiday Wedding. They insisted on their own story. Then my friend adopted three baby desert tortoises. A story line began to play out in my head, since Gwen is a wildlife rehabilitator and Brock is a veterinarian. They live and work in Salem, Massachusetts. Salem as always intrigued me, so I put a twist on the witch trials and a trip back in time. Then I threw in poachers in present time and a dog and owl rescue. Still what if’s just kept coming and Hidden Gypsy Magic was born.   

Additional inspiration was the Salem Witch Trials.  How can you set a story in Salem, Massachusetts and not mention the Salem Witch trials? Okay I admit it, I’ve always been enamored with the Salem Witch Trials since I was involved in a high school play The Crucible. Research into the Salem Witch Trials led me to believe that things were not always as they seemed. I wondered if the accounts of those judging the supposed witches had something to hide or were they on some kind of power trip. 

Researching one highly visible individual Judge in the witch trials, I had an epiphany. What if that person was not who or what he claimed to be? What if he had intimate knowledge of witchcraft and not just as a bystander?  Well, that could put a kink in the accounts of the Salem Witch Trials. Don’t you think? That’s what’s fun about writing fiction. LOL 

How about a little more about Hidden Gypsy Magic?

The Salem Wildlife Sanctuary is Gwen Taylor's life work.  Her Irish Gypsy heritage provides a hidden talent she uses to help the creatures under her care.  But even her magical skills can't help new rescues in dire need of veterinary care.

 

The opportunity of signing on as the vet for Gwen's sanctuary dropped into Brock Scutter's lap after he expanded his practice to include wildlife. The personal attraction he and Gwen experience is undeniable the more their professional and personal lives collide.

Carefully, Gwen took the poppet and eased her hand back into the painting. A vortex sucked her arm then her entire body into the painting swirls of red, blue, and yellow swam around her then she was falling. She gulped in air as her stomach flipped threatening to spill its contents into the void. Her throat hurt from screaming, yet there was no sound. Something hard hit her backside, then it was quiet, she blinked and rubbed her eyes. Finding herself sitting in a rocking chair that squeaked announcing her arrival, she straightened and several pairs of eyes peered at her with interest. The room was familiar— it was the living room of Brock’s soon-to-be house, only the furnishings were quite different. The dragon staircase…

Before she could grasp what was happening a swirling portal of colors opened up in the center of the room. With a whoosh her best friend, Pepper unceremoniously landed in the middle of the hardwood floor with a thud.

Pepper jumped up and brushed herself and stared at Gwen. “Another fine mess you’ve gotten us into. I nearly didn’t catch a hold of your magic trail into the painting.” She paused and glanced around. “Where the hell are we?” Pepper switched her attention to the three women and two men observing them from wooden chairs scattered around the room. “Hey, this is Brock’s house…but it isn’t. Oh no…” Her hand flew to her mouth as she sidled over and positioned herself to the side of Gwen’s chair.

“What?”

“Judging by the clothes these people are wearing, and the decor, the painting seems to have sucked us back in time,” Pepper whispered eying the group sitting before them.

“Holy cow, Brock is never going to believe this.” Gwen glanced at their surroundings. “If we ever get out of here."

Interview with Tena Stetler

I had the chance to interview fellow Rose, Tena Stetler, for my blog. Read on to meet her!

 What do you like about being an author? Crafting tales that will sweep people out of their ordinary world into a magical, romantic fantasy with a touch of mystery and adventure.   For a few hours a day, my readers forget about their problems, worries, stress, and the real world enjoying a feel good story with a happy ending. I think we all need that these days. Don’t you?

Absolutely!

What don’t you like about being an author? Having to put yourself out there for promo, etc. Don’t get me wrong, I’m an extrovert and love to talk to people, but sometimes reviews feel like you are being judged.  I realize writing is subjective and not everyone is going to like your work, but some revel in tearing it apart. 

Yeah, it can be tough sometimes. And some people...

What is the writing process like? I write 6 hours a day, promo two more. I am a panster, I have an overactive imagination so there are always voices in my head vying for attention.  When I start a new story, I have a 5 page character worksheet I complete, so I know my characters inside and out as well as their GMC before I begin.

How did publishing your first book change your process of writing? What is different now, compared to then? I love to write, but promo, not so much. Rather than spending hours writing, my time now is divided between writing and promo. I’ve learned a lot about editing and what is expected too. So polishing a manuscript takes on a different bent that before.

Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with bad or good ones? I do read every review. The good ones I read and reread.  The bad ones I read once to see how I can make my upcoming books better. Then I never read them again. 

Same here! 

How long on average does it take to write a book? 3-5 months from beginning to end. Sometimes the story flows flawlessly from beginning to end. Other times it’s like pulling teeth to keep the characters on the right path. Sometimes I lose and they make their own path.

What have you put most of your effort into regarding writing? Making sure I craft a great story with GMC, vivid descriptions and characters that my readers will find interesting and fun. There is always something to learn in the craft of writing.

What is the toughest criticism given to you as an author? Constructive criticism I can handle, it’s the mean spirited criticism that is tough to take. Gotta have a very thick skin in this industry.  

I'm still working on that.

What is the hardest thing about writing?  Getting my butt in the chair and keeping it there when there are so many other things demanding my attention.  And letting the book out into the world.

What is the easiest thing about writing? Living in a fantasy I’ve created. I’m not a fan of the real world. LOL I love telling my characters stories. Crafting a story for others to enjoy (of course I enjoy it too)is the best feeling in the world.

Do you write full time or part time? I’m lucky enough to write full time. Though I did write part time for a number of years as I had a demanding day job.

Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured? I get up, fix breakfast for hubby, and my furred, feathered and scaled kids. Take my dog, Mystic for a walk, then sit down at the computer around 7-8 a.m. write until lunch. Taking breaks to do laundry, vacuum, dust, load and unload the dishwasher, etc. Exercise from 10-11 a.m. or 1-2 p.m. depending on how the story is flowing. I write in the afternoon until 4 p.m. most days, that’s when I let my parrot out of her cage and we go in the sunroom. I don’t usually write on weekends, that’s family time. Of course as with anything, nothing is set in stone, and there are always rare exceptions.

Suddenly the wind increased and changed direction bringing a cold chill to the warm day. She tugged her sweater close around her as a thin maroon line formed along the flat bottom of a dark, boiling cloud spreading across the sky. Moments before there’d been only an occasional fluffy white cloud floating in the bright blue sky. Oh, no, not again.

The line slowly drifted to vertical and spread open to reveal a sparkling interior. Four striking creatures, sharp-angled features with fierce expressions on their inhumanly handsome faces appeared. Gleaming swords hung at their sides as they slipped out of the cloud and stepped onto the ground not more than fifty feet from her and Daylan along the tree line of the property. Holy shit. This can’t be happening.

She rubbed her eyes but when she opened them the men were still there. Dressed in heavy boots, jeans, and formfitting leather vests, shimmering silver bands adorned their muscular upper arms. Two of them had thick shoulder length blond hair, the others had jet black hair hanging in waves past their shoulders.

She jumped up and opened her mouth to scream. But Daylan reacted faster clapping his hand over her mouth while still facing the advancing creatures. To her surprise, a soft giggle escaped from her lips. They look like a group of medieval bikers. Their apparent leader, his reddish sable hair hung well beyond his shoulders in waves, paused a few yards in front of them.
